"On June 13 and 14, 1990, Saskatoon was the site of a very interesting and exciting workshop on farm surface water quality. For the first time, farmers, researchers, government and industry professionals from across the prairie provinces met to discuss and learn about common surface water quality problems. The theme of the workshop was Working Together to Improve Farm Surface Water Quality. Workshop participants wholeheartedly endorsed the workshop theme and recommended a newsletter be developed to inform the rural public and technical people across the prairies. This was the start of Prairie Water News." (Prairie Water News, Spring 1991, V.1, No.1)
In the five years since the 1990 workshop, much has been achieved in advancing the state of knowledge about rural water quality on the Prairies. Prairie Water News has brought attention to the results of co-operative studies and projects and served as a medium for continued communication among the sponsoring agencies. As recom- mended at the June 1990 Workshop, the time has come to review the goals established at the workshop to ensure that efforts are directed at current needs.

A second workshop -- Rural Water Quality on the Prairies -- will be held June 13-15, 1995 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Program information can be found in the centre pages of this issue. Once again, participation and feedback from Prairie Water News readers is encouraged. Newsletter subscribers will receive additional information in the mail; registration forms may also be obtained by contacting sponsoring agencies or myself.
Look for workshop highlights in the Fall 1995 issue. Additional copies of the proceedings will be available for purchase through the Saskatchewan Research Council.
On behalf of the Editorial Advisory Committee, I invite you to participate in the June 1995 workshop and help set the direction for efforts to protect and improve rural water supplies to the end of the century and beyond.
