The design and construction of water storage dugouts are important factors determining the longevity of the water supply.
Some questions need to be answered regarding each individual situation: What is the proposed use? What is the quantity and quality of water required? Will the local drainage supply the requirements? What can be done to enhance the situation?
The quantity of usable water may be increased with proper management. Some things to consider are: Trapping snow, increasing the drainage area, developing a deeper dugout, and developing shelter belts to reduce evaporation.
The quality of the stored water may also be enhanced with proper management. Consider grassing the waterway, planting a buffer zone, and constructing a sedimentation pond to reduce the nutrient levels flowing into the dugout. Design, management and maintenance of a water supply project all contribute to its ability to provide an adequate supply of good quality water in a reliable manner.
For assistance in developing a farm water supply, apply to your local PFRA office. PFRA provides technical and financial assistance to bona fide farmers and ranchers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the Peace River District of British Columbia. By applying to PFRA before starting construction, a farmer or rancher may be eligible for technical assistance and a grant of up to $1,650.00 per project. Besides answering the foregoing questions, technical assistance can include surveys and advice for constructing, managing and maintaining the project.
